What waste contamination means

Contamination occurs when different materials are incorrectly disposed of together. Plastic in organics, glass in mixed recyclables, or food waste in paper — each error compromises the overall quality of the process.

According to the Italian Composting Consortium (CIC), in 2023 the average purity of organic waste collected in Italy was 93.6%, with impurities at 6.4%. Although positive, this figure shows that contamination remains a real challenge, even in the most virtuous regions.

The consequences are tangible: more waste residues at plants, higher sorting and disposal costs, lower quality of recycled materials, and potential rejection from recycling consortia. Contaminated materials also lose economic value, reducing profitability across the supply chain.

Monitoring waste quality: a regulatory duty and a competitive advantage

The issue of waste quality is an integral part of both Italian and European legislative frameworks.

At the national level, Legislative Decree 152/2006 establishes that waste collection must promote recycling and material recovery. The UNI/PdR 123:2021 guideline, developed by UNI and CIC, defines methods to measure the quality of organic fractions intended for composting and anaerobic digestion, setting clear limits for non-compatible materials.

From a regulatory perspective, ARERA, through resolutions 15/2022/R/RIF and 450/2024/R/RIF, emphasized the importance of monitoring and improving waste collection quality as a key efficiency parameter of the service.

In summary, quality is no longer an added value, it is an operational, economic, and environmental obligation.

The Sisal Project: Technology, Spaces, and People

Launched in 2023, the project is the result of a collaboration between Sisal and NANDO. Its goal is to improve the effectiveness and quality of recycling in offices.
The approach combines an integrated strategy involving workspace redesign, smart technologies, and employee engagement. The project started in the Milan office and later expanded to Rome.

Main Phases of the Project:

1. Workspace redesign: removal of individual bins and introduction of centralized collection hubs equipped with NANDO systems;
2. Implementation of smart technology: plug-and-play devices with AI continuously monitor the quantity and quality of waste produced, achieving over 92% accuracy. NANDO’s AI can identify waste types and estimate the quantity and quality of recycling. Data is aggregated and displayed in real time on a digital dashboard accessible to facility managers and sustainability teams;
3. Employee engagement: alongside technical monitoring, NANDO.Quiz gamification was introduced to the Sisal community. Each time waste is disposed of correctly, users receive a quick quiz with guidance on the right bin. Correct answers earn eco-friendly rewards and discounts on mobility, food, and services, turning every action into learning and positive impact;
4. Environmental reporting: collected data is available in real time on dashboards for facility managers and sustainability teams.

Results Achieved: +10 Percentage Points in Recycling Quality and Over 3 Tons of CO₂ Avoided

Between November 2023 and May 2025, the project led to a 10-percentage-point increase in recycling quality across the two offices. 82% of the waste produced, equivalent to 9,369 kg, was recovered, generating a potential savings of 3,591 kg of CO₂ equivalent.

These numbers capture the essence of the project: a concrete approach to the Circular Economy, enabled by AI capable of turning information into action. As Alessia Silvestro emphasizes: “Innovation is a fundamental tool to make sustainability an integral part of our daily work.”

In many Italian cities, urban waste collection is still managed in a traditional way. Every day, trucks travel the same routes, stopping in front of the same bins regardless of how full they are. Sometimes the bins are overflowing, with waste left on the sides. Other times, they are only half-full, yet they are emptied anyway.

At first glance, this system might seem to work: the waste is collected. But behind this old-fashioned approach lies a huge economic, logistical, and environmental inefficiency, which weighs heavily on municipal and corporate budgets, while also damaging the city’s image and reputation. Solutions like NANDO, based on AI technology for waste management, can turn collection trucks into digital sentinels, gathering real-time data on bin fill levels and illegal dumping.

A snapshot of waste collection in Italy

Urban waste management in Italy is a complex and fragmented sector, involving more than 7,900 municipalities and hundreds of local companies or consortia. According to ISPRA data, the average cost of urban hygiene services per citizen often exceeds 200 euros per year, with significant differences between North and South. Of this amount, collection accounts for 60–70% of the total cost, a huge share considering that much of the routing is not optimized.

The lack of accurate data on volumes, fill levels, and quality of separate collection means route planning is often based on estimates or routine habits. This leads to paradoxical situations: trucks passing multiple times through low-waste areas, or densely populated zones where bins remain full for too long. The resulting risk is lower recycling rates and the failure to meet European Union environmental targets.

Every unnecessary kilometer driven by a waste collection truck has a real cost: fuel, vehicle wear, labor hours, and CO₂ emissions. A “blind” system that ignores real-time information not only wastes public resources but also contributes to increasing the overall environmental impact of waste collection. At a time when ecological transition is central to the European agenda, ignoring the potential of data means falling behind.

In some Italian municipalities where NANDO solutions have already been implemented, truck routes have been optimized, reducing up to 30% of mileage. This has also led to significant reductions in fuel consumption and pollutant emissions.

We are proud to share the outcomes of an exciting collaboration: NANDO to Monitor Waste at Riverberi Festival 2025 became a concrete reality on June 22nd in Milan. As the official technical partner of the event, NANDO was entrusted with tracking and analyzing waste flows throughout the day, helping turn the Riverberi Festival into a model for measurable sustainability.

Organized by TerraLab ETS, Riverberi Festival is a leading Italian event dedicated to sustainability, environmental awareness, and community engagement. The 2025 edition represented a unique opportunity to demonstrate how digital technologies can contribute to real-world environmental goals.

What “NANDO to Monitor Waste at Riverberi Festival 2025” Meant in Practice

The phrase “NANDO to Monitor Waste at Riverberi Festival 2025” wasn’t just a slogan. It was a real mission. As technical partner, NANDO deployed its AI-powered system to track waste in real time. This gave organizers live insights to guide decisions and assess environmental performance.

The festival took place on Sunday, June 22, at Arena Milano Est in Milan. It brought together environmental experts, institutions, and the local community. The program featured talks, workshops, and a 100% vegan, plastic-free ethical market. All activities aimed to promote sustainable living and raise awareness.

By monitoring and analyzing waste and resource use live, NANDO supported the festival’s goals of transparency and measurable sustainability.

• 72% of the total waste sent for recycling
